What Is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation refers to the use of radiofrequency waves to heat the tumor tissue to 95°C under the guidance of images (CT, color ultrasound), and to accurately insert the ablation electrode into the tumor site through percutaneous puncture, so that the tumor tissue produces local high temperature and complete necrosis, thereby achieving the purpose of treating the tumor. At present, this technology has been widely used in various solid tumors, especially for liver tumors, and has almost become the preferred standard treatment. It has the advantages of less trauma, a high cure rate, low cost and few complications.
How Does a Radiofrequency Ablation System Work?
A radiofrequency ablation system generally includes a radiofrequency generator, ablation electrodes and skin electrode, which together with human tissue form a complete circuit. The electrode needle is directly inserted into the diseased tissue of the human body, and the radiofrequency generator generates high-frequency alternating current (common frequency is 200kHz~500kHz). The current enters the surrounding tissue from the exposed part of the end of the electrode needle, causing the polar molecules and ions in the tissue around the electrode needle to vibrate and rub, and then convert into heat energy. As the operation continues, the heat energy gradually conducts to the periphery, which can make the temperature in the tissue exceed 60°C, causing irreversible thermal coagulation, degeneration and necrosis of the diseased tissue, thus achieving the purpose of treatment.
In conventional radiofrequency ablation, as the electrode temperature rises, local high temperature will occur, forming thrombus, eschar and carbonization on the electrode surface, which will affect the energy output and ablation effect. Therefore, a cold electrode radiofrequency ablation system can be used to improve the ablation efficiency and the success rate of the operation. The system uses an electrode needle with an internal tube and continuously pumps cold saline into the electrode needle through a cold circulation pump.
