Why Exist the Pulsation of the Peristaltic Pump?

Peristaltic pumps also called peristaltic tube pumps are the best solution for micro-volume liquid transfer, dispensing and filling precisely. The working principle of peristaltic pumps is that they are operated by compressing and releasing the flexible tube in a circular motion to plush liquid through the tube without exposing the liquid to mechanical parts.

The working principle of peristaltic pump causes a natural result of the pulsation. The pump head is consist of a rotor and its housing with a pump tube between the two. Fluid can become trapped between two rollers as it enters the head of a peristaltic pump. The trapped fluid forms a "pillow," followed by a void where rollers inside the pump head occlude the tubing. Alternating pillows and voids can cause the fluid flow to pulsate rather than be smooth and continuous.

How to Reduce the Pulsation of Peristaltic Pump?

Reducing the pulsation of a peristaltic pump is key for achieving smoother flow and improved performance, especially in applications where consistent flow rates are critical. Here are several strategies you might consider:

1. Use a Pump Head with More Rollers: Increasing the number of rollers in the pump design can help distribute the pumping action more evenly, which reduces pulsation. Chonry® DG pump head has multi rollers equipped with 6 rollers or 10 roller option. The DG pump head is supported multi-channel up to 12 channels. The max flow rate is 36ml/min. Small size, compact structure, saving the space.

2. A pulse damper can be used to relieve the pulse of peristaltic pump. It uses the principle of air compression to absorb pulsation and is also a commonly used component to eliminate pipeline pulsation. Pulse dampeners are not only used for peristaltic pumps, but also for pulsations generated during the operation of other pumps. Example of internal structure of a typical flow damper is illustrated below.

3. Increase the tube Length& Choose the suitable size of peristaltic pump tube. Sometimes, increasing the length of the tubing can help reduce pulsation as the additional tubing can act as a natural dampener. Ensure the diameter of the tubing is appropriate for the application. Oversized or undersized tubing can contribute to more significant pulsations.

4. Two channel peristaltic pump tube: Some pump heads can be installed with two tubes. By cross-squeezing the tubes during operation, the pulsation generated by the two tubes complement each other and effectively reduce the pulsation.
